Abstract

The Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science (PGI) was inaugurated in October 2015 as a result of a strategic partnership, established in January 2015, between NPL, the Universities of Strathclyde and Surrey, and the UK Government Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (now the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy). This review sets out the achievements of the PGI over the five-year period to December 2019, highlighting the growth in studentships, increase in industrial partnerships and training provision, and the development of a unified cohort of measurement scientists across the UK, with the resultant benefits to the more than 200 current doctoral students, 140 PhD graduates and associated stakeholders. The PGI’s vision and plans for the next five years are presented, showing how we aim to continue developing the collaborative model of funding to increase industrial and international engagement and deliver appreciable escalation of measurement science-related research and training.
