It has been known for some time that the watt balance is insensitive to some misalignments which would cause errors in conventional balances. This can be exploited to design watt balances whose coil motion is constrained which offer advantages over conventional designs. This note presents three such new designs: one is based upon a conventional balance and the other two are based on the known excellent qualities of strip-hinges in connection with measuring small force differences and with the production of precise linear movements with little motion in the other five degrees of freedom. A constrained design of this kind would be more appropriate for reproducing the kilogram whenever and wherever desired, and might well do so with less uncertainty.
