Stable mass measurements in vacuum are essential for several metrological reasons including; the gravimetric determination of air density using artefacts which requires the mass difference between two artefacts to be measured in vacuum and all the potential routes to a redefinition of the kilogram require weighing of masses in vacuum. Artefact contamination increases the uncertainty with which the mass of the artefact can be determined in vacuum. This paper describes work to determine the effect of contamination generated by an inverted magnetron gauge during the calibration of artefacts in vacuum.
