Abstract

This letter describes the design, fabrication, and characterization of an air-mode 1D photonic crystal resonator (PCR) operating at 100 GHz. The PCR was fabricated from an inexpensive cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) using computer numerical control (CNC) milling. It is demonstrated that despite the incomplete electromagnetic bandgap arising due to the low permittivity of the copolymer, it remains possible to realize a high quality (Q)-factor of 2800 through shaping of the resonant field to minimize out-of-plane radiative loss.
