Abstract

An analysis of the effects of relative humidity, temperature, and atmospheric pressure on neutron air attenuation at the distances commonly used for calibration of neutron detecting devices at NPL has been performed. The opportunity was taken to use the most up to date cross sections for the various components of air. The effects of humidity variations are completely negligible. Corrections for pressure and density variations are larger, and since they are easily performed should be incorporated in any analysis procedure. New coefficients have been calculated for the linear attenuation coefficients for monoenergetic neutrons as a function of energy at closely spaced intervals, and also for radionuclide source spectra.
