Abstract
Characterising the spectral attenuation and bandwidth of plastic optical fibre (POF) inevitably requires an understanding of launch conditions and the subsequent effect upon the modal and energy distribution within the fibre. At the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the development of a spectral scanning system that incorporates a flexible controlled launch system has provided a means to assess the effect of various launch conditions upon the attenuation and bandwidth of POF. In addition, the development process has enabled a deeper understanding of the issues involved.
