Abstract

Health and safety (H&S) is of the utmost importance in any environment, but particularly so in a laboratory. Ensuring effective and appropriate H&S measures requires a robust assessment of the dangers of the laboratory environment. However, even at a professional level, confusion between what constitutes ‘risk’ and ‘hazard’ often compromises H&S assessments and can result in disproportionate and excessive control measures, or the erroneous perception that certain procedures are banned owing to safety reasons, leading to many schools shying away from the more exciting, entertaining and inspirational experiments.
