Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the state- of- the- art of reference dosimetry for clinical proton beams. An overview of the requirements for reference dosimetry and of the primary standards and reference instruments used to establish the chain of traceable reference dosimetry from the standard dosimetry laboratory to the proton therapy center is presented. Current procedures and recommendations for reference dosimetry in the clinic are discussed at great length with a separate section describing the current status of and future needs for accurate reference dosimetry of scanned proton beams. The last section in of this chapter reviews dosimetric intercomparisons and reference dosimetry audits that have been performed to ensure consistent reference dosimetry among proton therapy centers worldwide.
