The redefinition of the kilogram in the forthcoming revision of the SI has been strongly supported by the many instruments which use the Kibble virtual work technique. For the forthcoming revision of the SI the instruments measured the value of the Planck constant in SI units; after the revision these, and additional instruments, will be used to maintain the world's mass scale. This paper provides a short description of the measurements which have been made to support the redefinition of the kilogram, the existing instruments which utilise the Kibble technique and the possible evolution of the technique after redefinition.
