Measurement and characterisation techniques for structured surfaces are now under development. The recently published international standard ISO 25178 - part 2, introduces feature characterisation that provides a stable solution for segmentation of areal geometric features. However, unambiguously understanding the boundaries of the areal features has received little attention. A boundary analysis method is proposed in this paper based on a tangent analysis algorithm. Following a four-stage feature characterisation procedure, dimensional parameters that relate to individual surface features, or relations between them, can be determined. A case study illustrates the performance of this proposed technique.
