Surface texture measuring instruments are dynamic systems that have a finite frequency response. A system has been developed to measure the transmission characteristics of surface texture measuring instruments by actively vibrating the sensor that measures the vertical displacement of the surface features. The system does not require closed-loop control of the input waveforms, can operate at high frequencies and is small enough to fit under high-accuracy commercial instruments. Traceability is obtained by calibrating the displacement of the vibrating platform using laser interferometry. The frequency response of an NPL-developed high-accuracy surface texture measuring instrument is determined using a prototype system and the results are presented.
