Abstract
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is increasingly being used as a tool to identify areas of potential environmental and human health impact of materials, technologies, and policies. Data quality and traceability within LCA is a significant issue that needs to be addressed in developing LCA as a decision support tool and its wider adoption within composite industry. In response to current data quality standards, such as the ISO 14000 series, various entities within the LCA community have developed different methodologies to address and communicate the data quality of Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data. LCI quantifies the inputs and outputs of a system, materials and data flows. Despites advances in this field, the LCA community is still hindered by the lack of reproducible data and documentation. As an initial attempt to address the issue, NPL has compiled this report following an investigation into data quality gaps that exist within the LCI specifically for fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites.
