Abstract

This document details the function of a tool for the calculation of an uncertainty budget in the context of a Mode I Interlaminar Fracture Toughness (ILFT) Test of laminated composite materials. The approach for the formulation of the uncertainty budget followed the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), whereas it should be noted that other practices do exist.

The tool in its present form, suggests a prototype version to work as a proof of concept. The current aim is to provide a digitised framework for calculating the uncertainty of a measured quality through the contributions of all relevant uncertainty sources entailed in the experiment.

To achieve this, work had to be done in order to approach the Mode I ILFT test from an uncertainty evaluation point of view, as this is a novel task by itself, considering the more complex nature of this type of test. Lastly, for the purpose of monitoring the crack growth, two methods were implemented, whereas one involves the use of video extensometry equipment, aiming to further indicate the effect of digitization in the evaluation of the uncertainty in measurement for this case study.
