Abstract
The manufacturing technology of hardmetal products is driven by tailoring their properties to performance requirements primarily through control of the WC grain size and Co content. There is increasing interest in hardmetal components with ever finer structures, especially sub 0.5 micrometre in WC diameter. Conventional measurement techniques, such as Fisher Sub Sieve Size, for characterising powders in this size range are working at their limit, if not below. Consequently, it is imperative that good practice is used for this and other complementary methods based, for example, on laser or surface gas adsorption (BET) techniques. An interlaboratory exercise has been conducted with participation by three global stakeholders: Sandvik Hard Materials, UK; Wolfram Bergbau- und Hütten GmbH, Austria; and Osram Sylvania, USA (now Global Tungsten Powders) in order to compare state-of-art powder characterisation techniques.
