This chapter introduces hard metals as essential materials for tool applications that underpin much of our manufacturing industry. They are normally composites of WC with a Co metal binder alloy, although many other compositions have now been developed. Microtribology experiments have been found to give insights into the mechanisms of wear and how they relate to the underlying microstructure of the materials. Different types of experiments including single-site multipass, abrasion simulation, in situ SEM, and wear-corrosion experiments are described. Finally, the benefits of combining the experiments with modern microscopy techniques such as EBSD are given.
