Abstract

In this chapter, various types of single-electron sources are introduced. We review their device operation mechanisms, limitations in operation speed and accuracy and their applications in quantum current standard and electron quantum optics. In the section of quantum current standard, methods for testing the accuracy of single-electron transfer based on the quantum metrological triangle and the effort towards the improvement of current-quantisation accuracy are discussed. In the section of electron quantum optics, we review recent developments towards the full characterisation of electron wave packets, including quantum tomography.
