Focusing on user experience, the emerging wireless communications for fifth generation (5G) and beyond will not just deliver a much faster connection and higher data capacity but will also promise to deliver low energy consumption and seamless connectivity between billions of people and trillions of devices, even in a crowded scenario, together with ubiquitous communication for the Internet of things (IoT). The rollout of the 5G and the definition of emerging wireless technologies such as the sixth generation (6G) is in progress. At present, with strong global momentum, multiple worldwide communities are working on various research and development activities for 5G and beyond.
As new technologies increasingly emerge in the arena of modern devices, antenna and system design for 5G and beyond, the standards bodies, industry and research communities are facing the challenge of diverse 5G technological requirements, and on verifying products that meet desired performance parameters. Metrological supports are essential for underpinning all aspects of 5G and beyond in response to high demand for universal, dynamic and data-rich wireless applications. Measurements of the signals, devices, antennas, complete system and radio frequency exposure assessments will be needed for development, manufacture and deployment of these new wireless communication technologies.
This book presents the state-of-the-art measurement capabilities, testbeds and the relevant research activities for 5G and emerging wireless technologies at a wide range of frequencies. Some topics to highlight are
● device nonlinearity and multiphysics characterisations;
● fully connected millimetre-wave hybrid beamforming testbed;
● investigation of plane wave generation using different facilities;
● International comparison campaigns;
● 5G wearable antenna methodologies;
● 5G NR OTA test metrology using different techniques;
● 3GPP/CTIA conformance test of 5G/6G base station and mobile terminals;
● OTA and channel sounding for V2X autonomous vehicles communications;
● channel sounding – empirical measurement and contribution towards ITU-R;
● world’s first real-time mMIMO trials;
● use cases on railway, train, drone and IoT;
● THz channel characterisations;
● RF exposure of 5G NR base station.
This book is first of its kind to focus on metrology for current and future wireless communication technologies. It provides timely support to industry, academia, standard bodies and national measurement institutes during the development of 5G and emerging wireless technologies. The book is divided into six inter-link parts: (1) waveform metrology; (2) device metrology; (3) antenna metrology; (4) system OTA metrology; (5) propagation channel metrology; and (6) RF exposure metrology.
