Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) functionalised with bio-molecule have been used to form composite with poly vinyl alcohol (PVA). Type I collagen has proven to improve the load transfer from the matrix to the tubes. We have shown that this collagen interacts with single wall carbon nanotubes and probably wraps around it. When a composite structure is formed with the collagen, the load transfer takes place through collagen molecule. The interfacial strength of the nanotubes-matrix interface was found to be 190 MPa, which is significantly higher than what has been observed before.
