Abstract

The internal gas proportional counting method was applied to standardise a 11C gaseous source in the development of a primary standard for positron emitters in gas. The PENELOPE Monte Carlo code was used to determine the corrections for the counting losses. The results from internal gas proportional counting were validated by using an NPL secondary standard re-entrant ionisation chamber which had been previously calibrated for 11C (as a liquid) by absolute counting. The activities determined by the two methods agree within the uncertainties.
