The accurate and reliable measurement of high temperatures, particularly above 1000 °C, is important in a very broad range of science and industry sectors. This paper outlines the current measurement capabilities in this temperature region at NPL both in non-contact and contact thermometry. It goes on to describe active research developments at NPL and elsewhere that are leading to step change improvements in the practice of high temperature thermometry worldwide.
