Abstract

A thorough examination of the repeatability of the melting and freezing plateaus of a VNIIOFI Re-C eutectic was carried out, comprising 57 independent transitions during two periods of investigation of six and two days respectively. For the first set, the standard deviations of the freezing and melting points were 0.13 K and 0.09 K respectively. The freezing temperature was 2747.9 ± 1.5 K (k = 2). After the eutectic was overheated by 58 K, there was an extreme undercool of over 230 K. Following this the eutectic exhibited a series of poor freeze plateaus. Methods were developed to improve the quality of subsequent freezes.
VNIIOFI and NPL Re-C eutectics were then compared and had freezing temperatures agreeing to 0.27 K, which was just outside the measurement standard deviation. The melting temperatures had a larger difference.
