Abstract

The measurement procedures in BS EN ISO 12567-1:2000 require that the surround panel used to measure window and door U-values in a hot box apparatus must be calibrated by carrying out hot box measurements on two glazed calibration panels of different thickness, each at three different temperature conditions. This report describes measurements carried out with the NPL Rotatable Wall Guarded Hot Box (RWGHB) following these procedures, using the glazed calibration panels TT206 and TT207, mounted in the 150 mm thick expanded polystyrene surround panel number Rothold2. The results are presented exactly as shown in the standard. Results are also given of a measurement carried out of a 1.48 m high x 1.23 m wide PVCu window system that had been previously measured using a different surround panel calibrated with these glazed calibration panels in the Wall Guarded Hot Box. The difference between the U-values from the two apparatus was 1.8%, which is excellent agreement, being only slightly worse than the measurement repeatability of the two apparatus (± 1.2%).
The draft standard prEN 12567-2 sets out measurement procedures for measuring the U-values of Roof windows and projecting windows. That standard also requires measurements to be made of the same glazed calibration panels but mounted in a different position in the surround panel. These calibration measurements have also been carried out with both horizontal and vertical heat flow. The results of those measurements are also included in this report.
