Abstract
New developments in applied mathematics and computing are reviewed to identify the research that will be needed to meet future challenges within the National Measurement System. Topics under review include simulation, modelling over more than one length scale, molecular modelling, distributed computing, parallel co-ordinate systems, risk and uncertainty, and data mining. In each case, new research areas are suggested for the Software Support for Metrology programme that are of importance to metrologists and the report identifies the key mathematical challenges that those new topics present. Each section of the report makes specific recommendations for activities that might be undertaken in the next Software Support for Metrology programme.
