Abstract

An analysis of the uncertainties in the measurement of the transient extensional viscosity of polymer melts has been presented. Illustration of these uncertainties is made by reference to the results for a test on a high density polyethylene. This example clearly shows the rapid growth in uncertainty at strains above a value of 4 due to the exponential decrease in the specimen’s cross-sectional area with time during the test. Below a strain of 4 the expanded relative uncertainty values, representing 95% confidence levels, are approximately ± 30%.
