Abstract

This is a Committee Draft of an ISO Guide that gives guidance on the determination of data needed for design with plastics. The design procedures are based on computer analyses that are used for simulating the processing of a component or predicting the performance of a component in service. The processing methods covered are injection moulding, exh'usion, blow moulding, blown-film exh'usion and thermoforming. Performance predictions are based on finite element analyses in which proper account must be taken, where relevant, of the non-linear, viscoelastic and anisotropic characteristics of the material.
The data requirements for these different analyses are explained, and measurement methods for determining the data are recommended. Where possible, these methods are based on ISO standards. Where suitable standards are not available, reference is made to methods that have been used to obtain the data.
Before publication, further developments will be made through ballots in ISO and meetings of the associated Working Group. Because of the wide-ranging technical issues covered by the Guide, comments are very welcome from readers outside the ISO forum.
