Abstract

Recently, infrared thermography has emerged as a novel technique for early detection of inflammation and incipient tissue damage in high-risk diabetic foot patients. Several studies have demonstrated that regular temperature monitoring reduces the risk of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU). In these studies, temperature assessment has been limited to the sole of the foot However, DFUs with nonplantar localization were recorded in more than 40% of the participants in the Eurodiale study. We hypothesize that a full thermal imaging sequence of both feet (plantar, dorsal, medial, and lateral) should be carried out to detect possible areas of inflammation which are not localized to the sole of the foot.
