Abstract

Pluggable optical interconnects within data centers are critical components supporting increas-ing data consumption. The optical links vary in their technologies and perfor-mance/measurement research continues in order to provide reliable characterisation of key pa-rameters. We present results from a recent research project, demonstrating the effect of temper-ature on the performance of these circuit boards. The effect on attenuation, encircled flux (EF) and bit error ratio (BER) – which impact the efficiency of these boards when used as data links – is presented, and we discuss how this affects standards.
This highlights the need for harmonization through standardization for electro-optical circuit boards (EOCB’s) to reduce the bandwidth bottleneck within data centers. The article concludes with a vision on the future of data center networks – increasing uptake of short-range optical in-terconnects to improve speed, continued growth in data traffic – and the need for standards bod-ies to adapt and introduce new industry-agreed metrology techniques.
