Abstract

The demand for greater and greater bandwidth has driven the manufacturers to produce smaller and smaller diameter coaxial lines and connectors. Some of these connectors have been designed to be mechanically compatible between different series and styles, for example the GPC-3.5 and the SMA series. However ensuring mechanical compatibility and designing both connectors to have a nominal characteristic impedance of 50ê does not create electrical compatibility. This article investigates the world of electrical compatibility and shows that surprisingly large errors can be produced by supposedly compatible connectors.
