Historically, the best guide for the realisation of the kelvin has been the text and associated supplementary information for the International Temperature Scales. Recent developments in thermometry and the planned redefinition of the kelvin have motivated the creation of a broader, more flexible document that incorporates both of the temperature scales in current use and approved primary methods supporting the redefinition: the Mise en Pratique ('practical realisation') of the definition of the kelvin (MeP-K). The MeP-K is a guide that provides or makes reference to the information needed to perform measurements of temperature in accord with the International System of Units (SI) at the highest level. In this article, the background and the content of the second version of the MeP-K is presented. This second version anticipates the planned redefinition of the SI base unit of temperature, the kelvin, to take place in 2018. The new explicit-constant definition will define the kelvin in terms of the SI derived unit of energy, the joule, by fixing the value of the Boltzmann constant. This definition is sufficiently wide to encompass any form of thermometry and leaves the MeP K to provide guidance on the practical realisation.
