Abstract

This report provides an overview and case studies for the three approaches to forest carbon measurement: in situ, airborne and satellite-based measurement. The advantages and disadvantages of methods currently applied to estimate forest biomass worldwide are discussed, with a combined approach recommended for a UK-based forest assessment. Effective resource management for timber stocks and deforestation in the UK requires accurate forest-non-forest mapping to monitor tree cover before biomass can be calculated.
