Abstract

A novel technique for verifying calibration of rectangular waveguide measuring systems such as Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs) is presented. The key aspect of the proposed method is that the verification device can be reconfigured to enable its characteristics to be changed by known amounts. Thus, the device behavior is based on introducing relative changes in the transmitted/reflected waves and so is insensitive to errors introduced by waveguide flange misalignments. These errors become significant in the millimeter-wave and lower terahertz frequency range and hence this technique is inherently suited to these frequencies. A WR-15 waveguide operating in the frequency range 50 - 75 GHz, is presented as a proof of concept verification device and modeling results for the WR-10 waveguide (75 - 110 GHz) are also given.
