Abstract

This paper describes a systematic method for calibrating polyimide recoated fibre Bragg grating (FBG) optical fibres and the associated models used to measure temperature and relative humidity (RH) from 20 ºC to 70 ºC and 20 % RH to 80 % RH. The method was validated over a period of two months by comparing known values of temperature and RH with calculated values from two FBG sensors with different thicknesses of polyimide recoat. Results show good agreement with calibrated values, with an average absolute error of ± 0.1 ºC and ± 4.5 % RH. Drift in the measured wavelength was observed for both thicknesses of polyimide recoats at combinations of elevated temperature and humidity. This drift was reversed after a reduction in the humidity. Additional results are provided for the use of embedded polyimide recoated FBG optical fibres for measuring moisture ingress within polymers and composites.
