Abstract

This report presents the results of a validation study of an Alternative Reference Method, developed by the Environment Agency of England and Wales, for measuring SO2 in stationary source emissions using instrumental methods. Eight instruments were tested against paired Standard Reference Method (SRM) measurements in accordance with the European Technical Specification for validating alternative reference methods, TS 14793. All eight instruments, implementing the proposed Alternative Reference Method, met the requirements for acceptance as alternative reference methods according to TS 14793. However, the ARM also specifies performance requirements for monitoring systems; whilst some of the monitoring systems used in this evaluation had been tested, proven and certified against these performance requirements, not all of the specific monitoring systems used had been tested and certified.
