Abstract
This report describes worked performed at the National Physical Laboratory on the application of coaxial reflectometric sensors to the measurement of RF and Microwave dielectric properties of laminated materials. It covers all work carried out for project 16(1) of the National Measurement System Policy Unit (NMSPU) RF and Microwave Measurements Programme for 1991-4 and also places the work in a broader context by summarising earlier developments. Measurements were performed in the range 300 MHz to 3 GHz, but findings apply over the whole of the RF and Microwave range. Both high and low loss materials can be measured and suitable specimens of one, two and multiple dielectric layers can be characterised. A cell attachment has been constructed which allows circular specimens to be measured more accurately. The cell also allows liquid immersion measurements to be performed, which affords greatly improved uncertainties. Three independent computer programs have been written to analyse multi-layer specimens. They have been intercompared and shown to agree numerically to well within expected measurement uncertainties. Measurements upon well-characterised materials have been compared with the program predictions and shown to agree sufficiently well to allow the system to be used for traceable measurements within the National Measurement System.
This report is a reissue of NPL report DES125 (1993), but further details of the mathematical analysis on which the computer programs are based have now been included. The report has been reissued in order to improve access to this work for researchers in the field.
