Abstract

Preliminary measurements have been conducted to determine the growth rate of short stress corrosion cracks in a steam turbine disc steel in aerated 1.5 ppm Cl- solution at 90 °C. The initial crack depths were in the range 473 µm to 672 µm. For these depths the growth rate was about the same or greater than a typical long crack growth rate. Further studies are required to establish the dependence of the growth rate on crack length at shorter crack lengths in order to test model predictions.
