Abstract

In this report, a description is given of the techniques employed to extend the frequency range over which free-field calibrations can be performed at the UK National Physical Laboratory. These techniques were developed at NPL’s open-water calibration facility, based on a reservoir at Wraysbury, with the aim of extending the low frequency limit from 1 kHz down to 250 Hz. A discussion of the requirements for free-field conditions is presented with a description of the methods employed to achieve these by use of the device mounting arrangement, choice of source transducers and signal analysis methods. The sources of uncertainty relating to the calibration methods are discussed and the levels of the individual contributions assessed. Finally, results of the calibrations performed are presented along with comparisons with measurements made in the NPL primary coupler and pistonphone facilities.
