Abstract
Conformal coatings have been widely used to protect electronic circuits from harsh service environments. This report investigates the protection performance of different type coatings in harsh environments using Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR) technique and correlates this with coverage of the coating. Environmental degradation can occur due to a number factors, which include process residues, surfactant, hydraulic fluids, de-icing fluids, marine environment, and gas pollutants (SO2, NO2, HCl). In this work the effect of coating type and coverage on performance has been evaluated. This has shown that coating type affects the level of protection against selected contaminants. Coating coverage plays an important role, with failure developing at the weakest point of the coating.
