The process of peer review of submissions to scientific journals is a well-established and widely used procedure. Typically, a submission to a scientific journal is sent out to two or more referees for review, who remain anonymous, but who know the identity of the authors. This traditional mechanism of appraisal is an important method of assuring the quality, relevance and novelty of published work. However, is there room for improvement in the procedural aspects of peer review?
