Abstract
Formulae are developed for the magnetic field strength of a Helmholtz system of two identical coils of square shape. The field of regular polygons of other than four sides is discussed, and it is shown that a simple change of co-ordinates leads to a general formula readily applicable to polygons of any number of sides.
The comers of the polygons cause departures of the magnetic field from the axial symmetry that circular coils display, but the irregularities are small, especially in the central region of the system. Examples of their amount for a square, an octagon and a dodecagon are given in tables. Departure from axial symmetry is negligible for the dodecagon.
