Abstract
Optical fibre polarisation controllers are widely used components with applications ranging from simple polarisation alignment to polarisation tracking and scrambling. Given the wide range of applications and uses there is a corresponding wide range of types and forms from simple manual Lefèvre loops to bulk optic rotating waveplates.
This report describes the types of polarisation controller available, the applications, the requirements of the applications and the suitability of the various types for particular applications. The report also describes the characteristics requiring measurement and assessment along with techniques for this assessment. A number of polarisation controllers were tested using the techniques described to illustrate the techniques and assess their suitability.
The report is written as part of the NMS Programme for Photonics Metrology GBBK/C/011/00005 as part of milestone 2.2.4.3.
