Abstract

This document provides specifications of software units for the evaluation of measurement uncertainty. It is intended to align with and support established guides and extend their functionality in a consistent manner. It is also intended to complement the best-practice guide to uncertainty and statistical modelling that has been produced as part of the UK Department of Industry’s National Measurement System Software Support for Metrology (SSfM) programme. The target audience is those who in their work wish to use software to assist in the evaluation of uncertainty.
This document is a revised edition of a previous report. It contains additional material on automatic differentiation techniques for calculating sensitivity coef-ficients, and aspects of the Monte Carlo procedure for uncertainty evaluation including sampling from general distributions, shortest coverage intervals, nonlinear sensitivity coefficients, and an adaptive Monte Carlo procedure. The document also accounts for revision of the SSfM best-practice guide to uncertainty and statistical modelling, and the preparation of the first Supplemental Guide to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement.
