Abstract

It is shown that a small error exists in much of the literature quoting the Roscoe equation for the determination of viscosity using an oscillating cup viscometer. Typical data from experiments with liquid metals are analysed using the correct Roscoe equation and the Beckwith-Newell formula. Comparison of the result indicate that the formulæ are essentially equivalent. There is a brief discussion on the role of wetting of the crucible by the liquid under investigation and end effects.
