Abstract

A swept-frequency Michelson interferometer system has been developed, based on a tunable visible laser diode with a stable Fabry-Perot cavity as a frequency sweep reference. Its performance has been verified by direct comparison with a displacement-measuring laser interferometer for path differences in the range 1 m to 20 m. The best fractional uncertainty of 3.2 x 10-6 is achieved at a distance of 8 m. The limitations of the technique are discussed, along with the scope for further improvements.
