Abstract

Over thirty hardmetals supplied by industry were characterised for their microstructure and mechanical properties. The measurements were used to validate WC grain size and mechanical property determination methods. The data from the tests were also used to develop the concept of property maps where either physical or mechanical properties are mapped against key microstructural features, such as WC grain size and cobalt content. The property maps can be used both to benchmark new materials and for the purposes of quality control to ensure consistency of product.
