Abstract

We report a experimental technique to measure and manipulate the time and energy distribution of electrons from a semiconductor electron pump, operated as both a single- and a two-electron source. By applying a rapid voltage modulation to an energy-selective detector gate, we measure the width of the single-electron wavepacket with a resolution of 30 ps, with some evidence that the wavepacket may in fact be shorter than this. By controlling the waveform driving the pump and comparing our results with theoretical modeling, we have studied the electron emission mechanism. This information was in turn used to control the emission time and energy gap between a pair of electrons.
