Abstract

Measurements following the decay of 223Ra have been performed of a radiochemcially pure solution with an ionisation chamber. The radioactive decay of 223Ra was followed for 72 days, i.e. approximately 6.6 half-lives of 223Ra. The calculated half-life of 223Ra was found to be consistent with currently published values, with a half-life value of 11.4358 (28) days, supporting the only other direct measurement of the 223Ra half-life published. A detailed uncertainty budget is presented of the current work. A new evaluation of the published half-life values was performed, indicating significant issues with the existing published values, suggesting that new measurements of the half-life of 223Ra are required. A new evaluated half-life has been calculated using a power moderated weighted mean of selected experimental values, with a recommended half-life of 11.4352 (20) days.
