Abstract

This Report presents the results of a study investigating the effect of humidity on the mass of filter samples of particulate matter (PM) collected in the UK. It was carried out in parallel with samples and blanks supplied from mainland Europe as part of a study coordinated by CEN TC 264 WG 15. The samples were taken through a series of different relative humidities ranging from 20% to 90%, in a cycle that would show:

·The effect and variability of mass changes with humidity on different types of blank filter;
·The scale of monotonic effects of humidity on selected PM samples;
·the scale of hysteretic effects that might lead to ambiguous results when the standard requirement of 50±5 % RH is met.
